The Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Christian Wulf, welcomed Dr. Gerhard Müller-Schwefe was awarded the Federal Order of Merit for his outstanding contributions to improving care for citizens with chronic pain. Dr. Müller-Schwefe completed his medical studies at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen in 1976. He has completed extensive clinical and scientific training and further education. In 1984 he was recognized as a specialist in anesthesiology. In 1987 he received recognition for the additional qualification “Special Pain Therapy”. From 1993 to 1997, Dr. Müller-Schwefe Vice President of the Pain Therapy Colloquium eV. In 1985 he founded the Göppingen Pain and Palliative Care Center. He has been President of the German Society for Pain Therapy (DGS) since 1997. Dr. Dr. has carried out many years of outstanding pioneering work. Müller-Schwefe served as initiator and vice president of the Göppingen District Hospice.

Dr. Müller-Schwefe has been committed and leading in shaping today's possibilities and modern care landscapes in the field of special pain therapy and palliative medicine. His admirable commitment to German pain research is unparalleled. He worked tirelessly to provide better, more up-to-date care for patients. He knew how to bring people together, arouse understanding and convince them. He tirelessly highlighted the importance of chronic pain for the insured community and the health system, thereby significantly stimulating research and care. His outstanding commitment to medical training, further education and training is immeasurable. He regularly devoted a lot of his time to organizing the extraordinarily successful German Pain Congress in Frankfurt. The current knowledge for practical care is continuously presented to the German medical profession and prepared for practical application. It can therefore be made available directly to patients. Tireless is Dr. Müller-Schwefe works as a speaker at national and international conferences and lets doctors and patients share his knowledge.

His conviction that science must address the care of patients and, crucially, the alleviation of suffering and pain, motivates his admirable creativity and committed implementation in the treatment of affected patients. Interdisciplinary and cross-sector research and treatment is his central concern. He continually passes on his wealth of experience and insights and makes them available for practical care. What is particularly noteworthy is his rhetorical talent and the ability to combine different interests through persuasion and targeted argumentation. In this way, he was able to address what was currently necessary to solve current problems and to translate groundbreaking visions for the future into practical treatment. He implemented interdisciplinary activities, interdisciplinary thinking and action, as well as cross-sector care as alternatives to opposition and demarcation. Dr. Müller-Schwefe never hesitated to take the necessary steps to improve patient care.
