The Cluster Headache Competence Center at the Kiel Pain Clinic and the Federal Association of Cluster Headache Self-Help Groups (CSG) eV held events on August 10th and 11th, 2012 at the Kiel Pain Clinic, Heikendorfer Weg 9-27, 24149 Kiel, as part of the 3rd Kiel Cluster Headache Days under the title Cluster Headache Baltic Sea Conference is a current one
Cluster Headache Academy 2012
with experts and those affected, to which cluster headache patients, their relatives and doctors were invited. Previous experiences, current developments and future visions for contemporary care of cluster headaches and paroxysmal hemicrania were exchanged and discussed.
This year's focus was on current neurostimulation procedures and their comparison with conventional treatment. These procedures were discussed both from the perspective of patients treated with these methods and from the perspective of specialists. Patients and interested doctors should be informed first-hand about the new treatment methods at CKS/TAK so that they can form their own opinion. The event was organized as a patient academy. The methods are first explained by a specialist. Treated patients then reported on their individual experiences. This was followed by a panel discussion on the method presented.

Dear Professor Göbel,
I am very happy to have taken part in this interesting and important event. Thank you for your commitment to this rare type of headache and for helping those affected to ensure that care can be provided more and more effectively and sustainably.
I would like to briefly describe how the two days of the cluster headache academy went.
The event was well attended with, I would estimate, at least 100 people. Many came from all over Germany, and I found this commitment very astonishing.
Prof. Göbel opened the event as host, followed by greetings from the Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Health, Ms. Annette Widmann-Mautz, and the former Federal Minister of Health, Ms. Ulla Schmidt.
Dr. Brunkhorst, the head of the Techniker Krankenkasse Schleswig-Holstein, was also present and praised the initiative of the Kiel Pain Clinic.
The lectures were started by Prof. Göbel with a general explanation about the disease cluster headaches, the currently common conservative treatment options and recent developments.
Dr. Müller, President of the CSG, reported on the status of the treatment of pregnant women, children and older people, some of whom almost completely fall through the cracks. Unfortunately, the specialist societies of gynecologists, pediatricians and geriatricians sometimes showed little willingness to develop guideline-based treatment for cluster patients. The harsh rejection of one of the professional societies outraged Dr. Müller and those present were very impressed, whereupon Prof. Göbel immediately offered to write an official letter.
In her bachelor's thesis, an affected student, like Prof. Keidel, pointed out the completely neglected aspect of the psychosocial component in cluster headache sufferers. People who are affected by the most severe pain conditions are usually not offered psychological support. Neither do the relatives. It is a legitimate demand that these therapy offers should urgently be included in the therapy guidelines of the DMKG and DNG. Prof. Göbel spontaneously agreed to support this too.
The second day began with a minute's silence for the pioneering headache pioneer, Prof. Dieter Soyka, who died last year.
Dr. Müller-Luchs from the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Health personally read out the ministry's greetings.
Dr. Kaube presented earlier surgical procedures such as DBS (deep brain stimulation) and current procedures such as spinal cord stimulation (SCS), ATI neurostimulation and pulsed radiofrequency therapy on the sphenopalatine ganglion.
Afterwards, Prof. Evers presented procedures such as ONI and ONS (infiltration and stimulation of the occipital nerve).
Patients who had already undergone surgery reported on their experiences. Questions could be asked throughout the lectures. This offer was very well received and there were critical voices particularly regarding the operational procedures. Not only one patient present who had an unsuccessful operation reminded us of the “fad” at the time to treat cluster patients with deep brain stimulation. This procedure is now considered to have finally failed and it will be interesting to see to what extent the newer procedures can be implemented for the benefit of patients.
During the breaks, works of art by those affected could be admired, which were exhibited in the corridors of the clinic.
The CSG is planning a similar event in the south next year.
All participants were enthusiastic and pleased that so much effort is being made to spread more knowledge and information about this most serious pain disorder.
Warm greetings from Munich,
Bettina Frank
Dear Professor Göbel,
Many of the participants assured me that it was a great event. In addition to many of those affected who were present, I know of a father who accompanied his adult son, as well as an adult daughter with her mother, who wanted to find out more about the suffering of their son/mother and were now much more reassured for the future son face attacks. The father: “Now I can calm my mother down too. “It was important and good that I came” (from near Mönchengladbach).
On behalf of the many who have now been reassured and also on behalf of all those who were able to obtain information and further education at this event, I would like to thank you for once again helping CSG eV so tirelessly, competently and in a friendly manner.
Best regards
Jakob C. Terhaag
I will also be there on August 1st and would like to introduce a patient. Should I bring the patient with me (he will participate) or just introduce him based on the file? Thanks for a quick comment!! Francis
