Accompanying word to the book by Dr. Martin Leonhard: “Success factors of my Kiel migraine case”

Headaches are the number one widespread disease, tension-type headaches and migraines are the most common neurological diseases in humans. Within a year, 86% of women and 71% of men in Europe are affected by headaches. Chronic headaches with more than 15 headache days per month occur in 9.5% of women and 4.9% of men. Migraine is the leading cause of disability in people under 50. Due to the severe suffering, those affected are looking for solutions. Over the centuries, many myths and prejudices have developed about headaches. The diagnosis and treatment options are often not based on scientific knowledge. The care provided to those affected was correspondingly inadequate. The treatment path was full of disappointment and prejudice. Those affected often turned away from scientific medicine and sought salvation in unconventional, scientifically untested procedures.

Fortunately, there has been a significant improvement in care in recent decades. New findings have been scientifically developed and the development and treatment of headaches has become one of the most successful fields of medicine. A particularly excellent development is that those affected are now taking a direct part in this progress and are actively helping to shape it.

Dr. Leonhard himself suffered from chronic headaches for years and wanted to actively change his situation. He was admitted to the Kiel Pain Clinic for interdisciplinary, multimodal pain therapy. He enthusiastically took up the various contemporary therapies and used them with motivation to improve his complex migraine disease. However, he didn't stop there. He recognized the need to advocate for others as a person affected and to pass on the knowledge he acquired here.

With his book “ Success factors of my Kiel migraine case ”, Dr. Leonhard other courage. He describes in detail how migraines work. Many patients have the expectation that a single cause is responsible for the migraine. They hope that if you identify these and turn them off, the migraine will be cured and you can live as you want. Dr. Leonhard dispels this false expectation and describes why migraine is an independent disease that is the cause itself and is not just a symptom of another disorder. With his training as a natural scientist, he purposefully analyzes the current findings on the development of migraines and describes in an understandable way the processes in the body that the genetically determined, lifelong willingness to take risks repeatedly leads to migraine attacks. It provides important insights into the self-determined control of these mechanisms.

Against this background, he explains the special characteristics of migraine patients in the areas of work, relationships and the social environment. With his selfless work he encourages other affected people. As a migraine patient, you can improve yourself the most through knowledge and information and organize your life in such a way that your willingness to risk migraines does not result in further attacks. The work of Dr. Leonhard deserves the greatest recognition and applause. He passes on his findings in a practical way. His book is a great example of initiative and self-help for migraine and headache sufferers. It is recommended for anyone affected to read.
