The German Society for Pain Medicine eV (DGS) has founded the Kiel Pain Clinic under the direction of Prof. Dr. Hartmut Göbel and the Institute for Neuroscience (IFNAP) in Nuremberg under the direction of PD Dr. Michael A. Named DGS Centers of Excellence Everywhere. The reason for the award is the supra-regional importance of the centers in pain care. The Kiel Pain Clinic is a leader in migraine and headache therapy and has therefore been named a DGS Headache Center of Excellence. The IFNAP in Nuremberg is a leader in research into the care of people with chronic pain and is therefore designated the DGS Center of Excellence for Health Care Research.

Centers that are of national importance in pain medicine care are recognized as DGS Centers of Excellence. Another prerequisite is the recognition of the center director as an opinion leader in the scientific discussion of a specific pain topic. This importance is reflected, among other things, in the publication of high-quality scientific papers and in the collaboration on guidelines. Both the Kiel Pain Clinic and the IFNAP in Nuremberg meet the criteria for a center of excellence.

Pain Clinic Kiel: DGS Center of Excellence for Headache
Prof. Dr. Harmut Göbel founded the Kiel Pain Clinic in 1997, initially as a scientific model project. The pain clinic is now a Germany-wide leader in the field of headache and migraine therapy. The clinic works according to the latest scientific findings and with the approach of integrated care. The aim of the treatment concept is to provide lasting pain relief so that patients can resume social and professional activities. To this end, Prof. Göbel also initiated the nationwide migraine and headache treatment network, which enables comprehensive, coordinated care. In addition, Göbel is involved in clinical research, training and further education as well as the publication of standard textbooks, digital care offerings and scientific articles.

IFNAP Nuremberg: DGS Center of Excellence for Health Care Research
PD Dr. Michael A. Überall has been Vice President of the DGS since 2003 and President of the German Pain League eV (DSL) since 2012. In 2003 he founded the private Institute for Neuroscience, Algesiology and Pediatrics (IFNAP) in Nuremberg, where he and his team developed the conceptual basis for the web application iDocLive®. iDocLive® is an internet-based network structure for the standardized documentation of pain-relevant data using the standardized pain questionnaires established in Germany as well as other internationally recognized and scientifically validated instruments. iDocLive® connects those affected with practitioners across sectors and ensures a patient-centered, needs-oriented and individualized progress evaluation in accordance with the legal requirements of the quality assurance agreement. It is the world's largest database with information on the causes, triggers, complaints and treatments of people with chronic pain. The platform is free for DGS members and all insured persons in Germany – regardless of their respective insured status.
