The current 3rd edition of the International Headache Classification of the International Headache Society (ICHD-3) was published in its final edition in January 2018. At the same time as the printed version, the digital version of the International Classification of Headache Disorders has also been made available worldwide under the leadership of Prof. Hartmut Göbel, Kiel Pain Clinic. The ICHD-3 follows the publication of the ICDH-3 beta in 2013. A beta version was developed for the first time in order to test the new diagnostic criteria in everyday practice. Numerous studies have been carried out, which have also contributed to significant changes. This significantly optimized the quality of the International Headache Classification.

The 3rd edition appeared exactly 30 years after the first International Headache Classification was published in 1988. This first version was initially largely based on expert opinions. However, it proved to be very valid and indispensable for the application. The second edition was published in 2004 and has also been made available digitally. The latest 3rd edition is based exclusively on scientific studies and is excellently backed by empirical evidence.

A generation has passed since the first edition was published. During this time, invaluable progress has been made in headache diagnosis and treatment for humanity. Before the first headache classification was developed in 1998, migraines and headaches were one of the worst classified disease groups within neurology. The international headache classification now provides the best possible classification of a neurological disease group. Precise classification and diagnosis is the key to successful therapy.
