For patients with therapy-resistant chronic migraine pain who do not respond adequately to other treatment methods, occipital nerve stimulation (ONS) offers new treatment options. These sufferers have usually had a chronic form of migraine for years. All guideline-based preventive medications and other therapeutic measures were administered without effect or were not tolerated. Since May 2012, peripheral nerve stimulation in the form of occipital nerve stimulation (ONS) has been approved for the treatment of chronic migraines. Affected patients can therefore decide with their doctor whether this form of treatment is a suitable option for them.

This treatment may only be carried out in certified, specialized and experienced centers. What is crucial is the precise analysis of the type of headache, the indication, the implantation by a certified neurosurgeon and ensuring specialized long-term care with therapy and follow-up by the migraine center.

The goals of the therapy are a reduction in the number of headache days per month, a relevant reduction in headache intensity, a reduction in acute medications and an improved quality of life.

As a service, we have developed a short operating manual and an emergency ID card in cooperation with treated patients. Important operating steps can be easily understood. We make these documents available for download here.
