Cluster headaches are among the most severe headache disorders. Cluster headache attacks occur with the greatest pain intensity on one side of the eye area. They are among the most severe pains that afflict people. Those affected are still considered the stepchildren of medicine. In recent years, initiatives by the national association of cluster headache self-help groups CSG eV made it possible to achieve a better level of information and analyzes of the needs of those affected and their relatives.
The aim of the nationwide coordinated treatment paths as part of integrated headache care (IV-K) is modern, effective, rapid and barrier-free diagnosis and therapy for those affected. The Techniker Krankenkasse initiated a nationwide care network with the Kiel Pain Clinic, the Schleswig-Holstein University Hospital and local pain specialists.
This network can be used to more effectively design the treatment pathways of cluster headache patients. The cluster headache self-help group, the Kiel pain clinic, network partners and the Techniker health insurance company have rethought, coordinated and expanded the care channels:
- Cluster headache attacks without effective prevention are considered an emergency with the possibility of short-term presentation to the headache center. Registration is required. Please do this via cluster@weckklinik.de or by telephone 0431-20099-0.
- The nationwide treatment network with specialized practices and clinics also receives in-depth training on current treatment options for cluster headaches and the treatment paths are specifically coordinated. Through local professionalization, qualified contact points for those affected by clusters are being expanded nationwide in all federal states.
- The Kiel Pain Clinic has a consultation service for regional doctors as a contact point and for information about therapy problems
- Joint research projects to improve care are being carried out
- The doctors providing further treatment will be informed about the CSG's self-help work
- National further training courses for doctors take place with the participation of the CSG
