The ten main rules for migraine patients – so that it works

  1. Try to optimize your daily routine, paying attention to regularity and consistency. Avoid anything too fast, too many, too sudden, and anything excessive.
  2. Use the migraine app for documentation. It will help you become your own migraine expert.
  3. Maintain a consistent sleep-wake cycle, especially on weekends. Therefore, set your alarm for your usual wake-up time and eat breakfast at the same time as normal. While this may be difficult, it can help prevent migraines over the weekend. After breakfast, you can go back to bed.
  4. Pay attention to eating very regular mealtimes. Eat a diet rich in complex carbohydrates.
  5. Do regular, healthy exercise – for example swimming, cycling, hiking; this helps you and your brain to “relax”.
  6. Strive for a particularly balanced lifestyle. Make sure you have time for rest and relaxation.
  7. Learn to say "no". Don't let yourself be pressured into things that disrupt your established rhythm – ultimately, it's up to you.
  8. Learn the relaxation technique "Progressive Muscle Relaxation according to Jacobson" (PMR). (CD courses are available under "Audio Recordings for Relaxation Exercises "). You can also find PMR in the migraine app. Practice regularly.
  9. Develop a greater distance from the seemingly unchangeable things of everyday life and become more relaxed. While you can certainly get annoyed about everything, you don't have to. Well-planned, regular breaks are the secret to a productive day.
  10. Follow the instructions for taking your medication. Preventive medications must be used regularly for several months; they usually only become effective after a few weeks. Take medication to treat an acute attack as soon as you recognize a migraine attack. Use the triptan threshold – you can also find it in the migraine app – to identify the best time to take it. Use acute medication on fewer than 10 days per month. Do not use acute medication that does not work reliably for you. Moderately effective medications that are needed frequently can increase the frequency of attacks. Get a prescription for a medication that works reliably.
