New ways in pain therapy

The Kiel Pain Clinic was founded as a scientific model project in 1997 and broke new ground in pain therapy when it began providing patient care.

The focus of treatment is on chronic neurological pain disorders, in particular migraine and headache disorders, pain disorders of the muscles and the musculoskeletal system, pain in diseases of the peripheral and central nervous system and pain in accident damage and nerve injuries.

The aim of our clinic is to provide patients directly with all the knowledge that is available internationally for the care of chronic pain and to take the needs of people with chronic pain into account in a highly specialized manner. We are also focusing on research into neurological pain disorders, migraines and other headaches in order to further improve future treatment

Several years of independent scientific research carried out by AOK-Schleswig-Holstein and the Society for System Consulting in Health Care have confirmed that the Kiel Pain Clinic's treatment concept provides lasting pain relief. This allows patients to resume social and professional activities. At the same time, the direct and indirect costs of chronic pain diseases are significantly reduced. In the past ten years, our Pain Clinic Kiel team has carried out more than 10,000 inpatient treatments and over 50,000 outpatient treatments. Approximately 30% of the patients treated came from Schleswig-Holstein and approximately 70% from throughout Germany and abroad.

The conception of the Kiel Pain Clinic anticipated modern developments in medicine, particularly integrated care.
Process of integrated care at the Kiel Pain Clinic
Integrated care means that treatment is not restricted by professional boundaries. The isolation of outpatient and inpatient care areas will also be lifted. Experts from various medical fields work together to treat patients hand in hand using modern scientific methods. Outpatient and inpatient treatment are closely coordinated. The treatment network initiated in 2007 with the Techniker Krankenkasse takes up these experiences and uses them nationwide. For this purpose, a comprehensive, coordinated care network was created for the first time in order to improve the quality of treatment across the region. The Kiel Pain Clinic is responsible for the nationwide coordination of the network, comprehensive information for patients, and further training and exchange of experiences for therapists.

With the implementation of the concept, the Kiel Pain Clinic – unique in its form in Germany – offers coordinated outpatient and inpatient neurological-behavioral medical treatment specifically aimed at patients with chronic pain. The employees of the Kiel Pain Clinic are specialists from various medical and psychological specialist groups. They only care about the needs of patients with chronic pain and make the latest scientific findings immediately available for use.
