For the past few days, the CAP SAN DIEGO has been moored in the mouth of the Schwentine River, in front of the Kiel Pain Clinic. It is the world's largest seaworthy museum cargo ship. Its elegant silhouette is usually as much a part of the Hamburg harbor panorama as the Speicherstadt (warehouse district) and St. Michael's Church. Since the end of Kiel Week, it has enhanced the view from the Kiel Pain Clinic of the city skyline, the town hall tower, and the Schleswig-Holstein State Parliament.
The CAP SAN DIEGO is the last remaining ship of a series of six fast general cargo vessels. It was built in 1961/62 for the Hamburg Süd shipping company. Until the end of 1981, it primarily sailed to South America. Since 1988, the CAP SAN DIEGO has been a museum ship. In 2003, it was designated a maritime monument and converted into a floating hotel. It returns to Hamburg on July 12th.
