Kiel, March 8, 2016. This morning, many rubbed their eyes in disbelief when they saw the view from the clinic. The buildings on the opposite bank of the Schwentine River, houses 5 and 6 of the fish market, are being demolished, clearing the construction site for the new building. The impressive addition will be 27 meters high, 128 meters long, and 63 meters wide. The new research campus is scheduled for completion by the end of 2018. This futuristic building will significantly shape the future-oriented atmosphere along the Schwentine River for generations to come. A single-story base, clad in reddish-brown Corten steel, will form the foundation. Several building complexes will be built upon this base, most of which will feature glass facades. The campus will house over 400 employees of the research center. The project is estimated to cost 90 million euros. We will witness the historic farewell to the existing structure and the emergence of this exceptionally successful, futuristic building over the next two years. The Schwentine estuary will be further enhanced and become an international landmark for Kiel.
