On the subject: Pain, go away! The fight against migraines, back pain and the like on Sunday, 6 to 8 pm on NDR 1 Welle Nord
Experts answer your questions
Are my constant headaches migraines? And how can these attacks be effectively combated? Do I really need to buy glasses, wear shoe inserts, or even have certain teeth extracted, as some doctors recommend, to overcome the pain? Or are the causes something else entirely? And who actually pays for these therapies? NDR 1 Welle Nord presenter Thomas Lenz will discuss these and other questions with his guests on Sunday. Live in the studio are:
- Dr. Axel Heinze, Senior Consultant at the Kiel Pain Clinic
- Dr. Johann Brunkhorst, Head of the Techniker Krankenkasse Schleswig-Holstein
In addition, pain patients, doctors, psychologists and physiotherapists have their say.

Pain in Schleswig-Holstein
Approximately 15 million people in Germany suffer from chronic pain. Many sufferers have endured a long and arduous journey through all sectors of the healthcare system, constantly searching for appropriate help. Many abandon conventional medicine, self-medicating with over-the-counter painkillers or resorting to unconventional therapies. This often leads to delayed, effective treatment, serious complications, and chronic pain. It is estimated that health insurance companies across Germany spend €200 million annually on medication-overuse-related kidney damage alone. For many patients and their families, this period of suffering significantly reduces their quality of life.
According to recent studies, around 17 percent of women in Schleswig-Holstein suffer from migraines. Approximately 60,000 women and 40,000 men take painkillers every day. In Germany's northernmost state alone, health insurance companies spend around 75 million euros annually on analgesics (painkillers). This makes analgesics/anti-rheumatic drugs the leading category in overall pharmaceutical expenditure.
Analyses of reasons for sick leave due to headaches show that almost half of patients have no specific diagnosis. In men, in particular, the diagnosis remains unclear in over half of cases. This underscores the need for specialized knowledge to address the underlying causes of pain and sick leave. Currently, there are 250 different types of headaches that could be specifically identified and treated.
Headaches are increasingly affecting schoolchildren and young people in vocational training, resulting in an average of three weeks of absence from school or training. Current studies show that more and more children are suffering from headaches even when they start school. In the last 20 years, their number has risen from two percent to around six percent of all first-graders.
