Dresden (February 26, 2016) Tension headaches and migraines are among the most common neurological disorders. Women, in particular, often experience a significant reduction in their quality of life. In 2014 alone, more than 21,000 Barmer Barmer GEK policyholder data, this represents almost five percent of all insured individuals in the Free State of Saxony. Extrapolated to the entire state, this would amount to more than 200,000 people suffering so severely from the symptoms that they require medical treatment. More women than men are affected, and even children are impacted.
Helicopter years in life planning
It is striking that the number of people affected by mental health issues in the 20-30 age group increased for both men and women between 2010 and 2014. The number of affected men aged 30-40 also doubled. "We can only speculate about the reasons for this," says Claudia Szymula, spokesperson for Barmer GEK in Saxony. "During these phases of life, most people are faced with a multitude of decisions. They typically complete their education and begin career planning, perhaps while simultaneously considering family planning. In short, the pressure to make the right choices increases during this period," Szymula explains, describing possible reasons for the increased numbers in these age groups. A further significant increase was also observed among 70-80 year olds. Fortunately, the numbers have decreased in most other age groups.
Learning how to deal with headaches while still in school
Even children and teenagers complain of headaches. "We need to start right here," says Szymula. For this reason, Barmer "Aktion Mütze – Kindheit ohne Kopfzerbrechen" (Operation Hat – Childhood Without Headaches) , a nationwide prevention program for schools. "Through education and a health-promoting approach to everyday life, headaches in young people are to be prevented. The project aims to structure children's daily lives in such a way that headaches occur as infrequently as possible or are avoided altogether. Schools, parents, and children are made aware of the issue. Because when your head is pounding, you can't think straight," Szymula explains the program.
