Tension-type headaches are the most common type of headache. Local topical treatment with peppermint oil (Oleum menthae piperitae) has proven significantly effective compared to placebo in controlled studies. Peppermint oil intervenes in the pathophysiology of tension-type headaches through numerous mechanisms of action. Its efficacy is comparable to that of acetylsalicylic acid or paracetamol. Peppermint oil 10% in ethanolic solution is approved for the external treatment of tension-type headaches in adults and children from the age of six. It is included in the guidelines of professional societies and is considered a standard medication for the acute treatment of tension-type headaches.
The NDR Visite report discusses the mechanisms of action and further application possibilities.
I can confirm this from my own experience.
At the Kiel Pain Clinic, I was extremely impressed with the use of peppermint oil, and at work, a peppermint oil roller (pen) is my constant companion.
