According to the World Health Organization, migraine ranks sixth among the most disabling diseases in humans. Headache disorders as a whole rank third among the most disabling diseases worldwide. Around one million people in Germany alone suffer from migraine attacks every day. Of these, 100,000 are bedridden daily. Worldwide, over one billion people are affected. While migraines and headaches are not usually fatal, they do claim many lives. Suffering, disability, social withdrawal, interruption of schooling, university studies, or employment, and severe psychological and physical complications are the fate of many sufferers. Migraine causes very severe, throbbing, pulsating headaches. Physical activity intensifies the pain, confining patients to bed. They are unable to participate in social and professional life. The attacks can be accompanied by severe nausea and intractable vomiting. Light and noise sensitivity, as well as a generally heightened sensitivity to other sensory stimuli, further exacerbate the attacks. In over 10% of sufferers, attacks can be preceded by neurological deficits such as severe visual disturbances, paralysis, speech disorders, or altered consciousness. Serious complications of migraine include stroke, epileptic seizures, and accompanying mental health conditions. In Germany alone, an average of 8.3 million people take headache medication daily to treat severe headaches.

The lack of knowledge among many healthcare professionals is the most significant barrier to modern treatment. In the six-year medical school curriculum, migraine and headaches are addressed for an average of only about four hours worldwide. A large number of people with headaches receive no diagnosis and no treatment: according to the WHO, only 40% of migraine patients and only 10% of patients with medication overuse headache (MOH) receive a professional diagnosis.

The lack of awareness surrounding migraines and headaches is also evident among the general public. Headaches are not perceived as serious because they usually occur episodically, are not fatal, and are not contagious. Many governments worldwide fail to recognize the significant burden headaches place on society. The societal impact of individual suffering and long-term complications is significantly underestimated. The EU ranks headaches as the third most expensive disease of the nervous system.
