Headaches are one of the most common symptoms that general practitioners encounter in their daily practice. In Germany, over 8 million people are affected by migraines within a single year. To help patients in the long term, it is crucial to be familiar with the most important differential diagnoses in order to initiate effective steps to alleviate their symptoms and enable patients to actively participate in life. In a joint workshop in April 2019, migraine experts from the fields of neurology, specialized pain therapy, and experienced general practitioners explored the most important aspects of migraine diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and treatment. Approximately three-quarters of migraine patients are treated by their general practitioner for their symptoms. This makes the general practitioner usually the first point of contact, and the general practice a central component in the care of these patients. Patients should also actively participate by documenting their symptoms so that doctors can quickly draw the right conclusions.
