The Essen Regional Pain Center, headed by Dr. Astrid Gendolla, hosted its traditional Essen Pain Symposium from November 23-24, 2012. This year's event was themed "15 Years of Cooperation between Kiel and Essen." Intensive cooperation between the neurological-behavioral pain clinic in Kiel and Dr. Gendolla began in the 1990s. Dr. Gendolla conducted research at the neurological clinic of the University of Essen, specializing in migraine and headaches. She was the first director of the West German Headache Center at the University of Essen. During this time, numerous joint research projects were carried out in collaboration between Dr. Gendolla and Prof. Dr. Hartmut Göbel. Intensive joint treatment of severely affected patients, referred from Essen to the Kiel Pain Clinic for intensive inpatient neurological-behavioral therapy, also took place. In 2009, Dr. Gendolla founded the Astrid Gendolla runs the Essen Regional Pain Center, which specializes in migraine and headache therapy. Dr. Gendolla and the Essen Regional Pain Center are members of the nationwide headache treatment network.

This year's Essen Pain Symposium focused on current treatments for migraines and headaches. Professor Dr. Göbel presented on modern options for migraine and headache therapy. A key focus was the treatment of chronic migraines with botulinum toxin and neuromodulation procedures. Professor Dr. Vesper, from the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Düsseldorf, presented the possibilities of neurosurgical therapy for chronic migraines, with a particular emphasis on occipital nerve stimulation. The head of the Essen migraine self-help group shared her personal experience following the implantation of a neurostimulator for occipital nerve stimulation in her chronic migraine. Despite the severity of her migraines and their resistance to other treatments, she experienced a significant and lasting improvement in her severe migraine attacks approximately four to five weeks after the implantation.

The following pictures give some impressions of the exceptionally informative and very successful event of the regional pain center Essen.
