New approaches in pain therapy
The treatment focus is on chronic neurological pain disorders, in particular migraine and headache disorders, pain disorders of the muscles and musculoskeletal system, pain in diseases of the peripheral and central nervous system and pain in accident damage and nerve injuries.
The goal of our clinic is to make all internationally available knowledge for the treatment of chronic pain directly accessible to patients, while highly specialized in addressing the needs of people with chronic pain. In addition, we focus our attention on researching neurological pain disorders, migraines, and other headaches in order to further improve future treatments
Several years of independent scientific research conducted by AOK Schleswig-Holstein and the Society for System Consulting in Healthcare has confirmed that the treatment concept of the Kiel Pain Clinic provides lasting pain relief. This allows patients to resume social and professional activities. At the same time, the direct and indirect costs of chronic pain conditions are significantly reduced. Over the past ten years, our Kiel Pain Clinic team has performed more than 10,000 inpatient and over 50,000 outpatient treatments. Approximately 30% of the patients treated came from Schleswig-Holstein, and approximately 70% came from other parts of Germany and abroad.
The concept of the Kiel Pain Clinic anticipated modern developments in medicine, particularly integrated care. Integrated care means that treatment is not limited by disciplinary boundaries. The separation between outpatient and inpatient care is also eliminated. Experts from various medical disciplines collaborate to treat patients using state-of-the-art scientific methods. Outpatient and inpatient treatment are closely coordinated.

The treatment network initiated in 2007 with the Techniker Krankenkasse (a German health insurance company) builds on these experiences and utilizes them nationwide. For the first time, a comprehensive, coordinated care network was established to improve the quality of treatment across regions. The Kiel Pain Clinic is responsible for the nationwide coordination of the network, providing comprehensive patient information, continuing education, and facilitating the exchange of expertise among therapists.
With the implementation of this concept, the Kiel Pain Clinic – unique in its form in Germany – offers coordinated outpatient and inpatient neurological-behavioral medicine treatment specifically tailored to patients with chronic pain. The staff of the Kiel Pain Clinic are specialists from various medical and psychological disciplines. They are exclusively dedicated to the needs of patients with chronic pain and make the latest scientific findings readily available for practical application.
