25th German Pain and Palliative Care Day: Professor Dr. Hartmut Göbel awarded pain prize – German Advancement Award for Pain Medicine goes to Kiel

Frankfurt, March 21, 2014 – Professor Dr. Hartmut Göbel, a neurologist from Kiel, was awarded this year's GERMAN PAIN PRIZE – German Advancement Award for Pain Medicine – for his commitment to the care of migraine and headache patients. The scientific sponsor of the prize is the German Society for Pain Medicine (DGS). The prize was presented by Dr. Gerhardt Müller-Schwefe, President of the German Society for Pain Medicine, at the 2014 German Pain and Palliative Care Day in Frankfurt am Main.

“Professor Göbel has been committed to improving the care of migraine and headache patients for more than three decades. Furthermore, with great personal dedication, he has created a healthcare facility that exemplifies interdisciplinary diagnostics and therapy,” said Dr. Gerhard HH Müller-Schwefe, conference president and president of the DGS, in his laudatory speech.

In 1997, Göbel founded and conceived the Kiel Pain Clinic as the world's first neurological-behavioral medicine clinic for the interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral specialized treatment of migraines, headaches, and neurological pain disorders. He had already established a special outpatient clinic for migraines, headaches, and neurological pain disorders in Kiel in 1989.

“Thanks to Professor Göbel’s continuous commitment to education and training, the latest options in migraine and headache therapy have been made available to patients. This led to the conception and nationwide first-of-its-kind development of integrated care in the field of migraine and headache therapy,” said Müller-Schwefe.

Professor Göbel has led numerous clinical studies and authored more than 450 publications, including on the epidemiology and classification of pain disorders, new forms of care in pain therapy, and new treatment methods for migraine and headaches. His research focuses on basic and clinical studies of primary and secondary headache disorders, the epidemiology and classification of pain disorders, the development and evaluation of new forms of care in pain therapy, the leadership and conduct of international clinical trials on new treatment methods for migraine and headaches, pain measurement and clinical application, the genetics of neurological diseases, the neurophysiological basis of pain and headache disorders, phytotherapy, and the mechanisms of action and effectiveness of pain therapy interventions such as receptor agonists and receptor antagonists, antibodies, neurotoxins, and neuromodulation.

The German Pain Prize – German Advancement Award for Pain Medicine – is awarded annually to individuals who have distinguished themselves through scientific work on the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain, or who have made a significant contribution to improving care and understanding of pain and the patients affected by it through their work or public activities. The scientific sponsor of the prize is the German Society for Pain Medicine (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Schmerzmedizin e.V.); the prize is awarded jointly with the German Pain League (Deutsche Schmerzliga e.V.) and sponsored by Mundipharma GmbH & Co. KG, Limburg.
