The University of Kiel plans to launch a new academic Master of Migraine and Headache Medicine (MMHM) program in the winter semester of 2021/22. The program is designed for working professionals and is structured as a four-semester, part-time course. Lectures will be held on weekends and during intensive on-campus weeks. The Master's program will cover the latest developments in migraine and headache therapy. At its core is an interdisciplinary concept with both theory- and practice-oriented modules. Graduates will receive the academic degree of Master of Migraine and Headache Medicine (MMHM). The International Headache Society (IHS) has assumed patronage of the Master's program.

Opinions on the new study program

“The Master of Migraine and Headache Medicine program offers students a comprehensive overview of the clinical picture of headaches. The multidisciplinary curriculum teaches new scientific findings and treatment strategies, enabling graduates to specialize in this field. This further improves patient care. I am very pleased to be involved as a lecturer in this program.”
Prof. Dr. med. Ralf Baron , Department of Neurology, Head of the Section for Neurological Pain Research and Therapy, University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel Campus
"The academic degree in Headache Medicine being developed at the University in Kiel, Germany, is excellent and covers everything that the student needs to learn about headache. It is extremely well thought-out and comprehensive and includes both remote and in clinic learning on actual patients during a full week and several weekends. Similar Master Degrees in Migraine and Headache Medicine are available in several countries and this one is needed to spread the training of doctors interested in Headache Medicine. I congratulate the developers for a job well done."
Prof. Alan M. Rapoport, MD , Past President The International Headache Society (IHS), The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in Los Angeles, California
"The planned Master of Migraine and Headache Medicine at University of Kiel is an excellent initiative. Worldwide there is a huge unmet need for education in headache disorders and such a detailed and carefully planned academic program as the present is warmly welcomed in the headache and pain community. The Pain Clinic in Kiel has been founded and directed by Professor Hartmut Göbel and is one of the leading headache clinics in the world, with a yearlong and continuous inspiration for multiple other clinics around the world including the Danish Headache Center in Copenhagen. The planned Master Program is perfectly situated at this clinic and at The University of Kiel with balanced theoretical and clinical courses and aims to equips graduates with solid scientific and clinical knowledge, skills and competences within the headache field. Further, this inspiring and comprehensive program will also contribute to the significant need for skillful and dedicated headache specialists and more awareness of headache disorders.”
Professor Rigmor Højland Jensen MD, Dr.Med Sci. , Director, Danish Headache Center, Department of Neurology, Head of Studies: Master of Headache Disorder, University of Copenhagen, Denmark
“Migraines and headaches are the most common neurological disorders overall. Many patients with headaches and facial pain are urgently seeking competent and up-to-date care. This degree program helps to close an important gap in the academic training of experts. It will undoubtedly have a very positive impact on treatment in Germany in the coming years, along with further qualified treatment options and research initiatives for those affected.”
Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Charly Gaul , Secretary General of the German Migraine and Headache Society (DMKG)
“As a representative of German pain medicine, which strives for high-quality care for patients with chronic pain that keeps pace with current scientific developments, I am extremely pleased that Kiel University, under the leadership of Professor Dr. Göbel, is working to improve the quality of care for patients with migraines and headaches. The new degree program will become a milestone with a lasting impact on health policy. Ultimately, patients and modern healthcare will benefit, as they will have access to highly qualified physicians with extensive expertise in the treatment of their headache disorders.”
Dr. Johannes Horlemann , President of the German Society for Pain Medicine
“The time is ripe! I think it's fantastic that the Master's program in Migraine and Headache Medicine has been established at Kiel University. As a specialist, the diagnosis of headaches and the care of headache patients are very close to my heart. I was fortunate and privileged to be taught by highly qualified instructors early in my career – both nationally and internationally. I am very happy to contribute as a lecturer in the structured Master's program in Migraine and Headache Medicine. I am proud to be able to share my knowledge and skills in Kiel, the “German cradle of headache research and patient care.”
Dr. med. Astrid Gendolla , Vice President of the German Pain Society (DGS), Head of the regional DGS Pain Center Essen
“It is often a major problem for sufferers to find a headache specialist nearby, and when one is found, the waiting list is long. Headache patients are still underserved, underdiagnosed, and their suffering is not taken seriously enough. We welcome every graduate who dedicates themselves to the widespread problem of headaches.”
Veronika Bäcker , President, Migraine League Germany

Migraine and headache disorders are, after dental caries, the most significant widespread diseases. However, less than 20% of those affected receive guideline-based prevention or acute therapy. The need for modern care is high. Knowledge regarding classification, diagnosis, and therapy has expanded considerably. Current basic research and clinical studies have formed the basis for modern treatment. The individual suffering and the significant societal impact necessitate a focus on specific areas. This increases the demand for qualified, interdisciplinary migraine and headache experts.

The Kiel Pain Clinic and the Faculty of Medicine at Kiel University have therefore developed the Master's program in Migraine and Headache Medicine (MMHM). Renowned and qualified lecturers present an interdisciplinary academic body of knowledge. Students can also actively contribute their diverse professional experiences and expertise. Various teaching methods, such as case seminars, clinical days, and group discussions, provide ample opportunity for this. A key element is the wide range of practical events in outpatient and inpatient settings.

The program is designed for working professionals. Comprehensive theoretical training combined with a strong practical focus is central. Fundamentals and therapy are taught over three semesters. This is a university-level program of high academic rigor. Key areas of focus include the organization and structure of treatment. Topics such as DRGs, multimodal treatment, and outpatient and inpatient care are covered in detail. The on-campus sessions take place over 15 weekends during the first three semesters. A three-week clinical internship is completed at the Kiel Pain Clinic. The subject-specific master's thesis is written in the fourth semester.

The entry requirement is a university degree with at least 240 ECTS credits. Possible fields include human or dental medicine, psychology, or a related subject. Health sciences, nursing, natural sciences, and engineering are also acceptable. In addition, at least two years of professional experience in the field of medicine or psychology is required.

The university's Center for Continuing Academic Education organizes the program. In many cases, employers can cover the tax-deductible tuition fees. Furthermore, financial support through scholarships is planned. You can apply for a scholarship by submitting your curriculum vitae and, if applicable, your list of publications. The International Headache Society has pledged to award one scholarship following a selection process conducted by the IHS Education/Juniors Group.
