in close collaboration between experts from the Kiel Pain Clinic, the nationwide headache treatment network, the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) , the headache self-help groups www.headbook.me , and social communities of sufferers with over 20,000 users. It has been available for iOS since September 2016 and for Android since February 2017. It is currently used by over 100,000 users nationwide.

The migraine app is a milestone in the prevention and treatment of migraines and headaches. It is the first app embedded in a coordinated medical care concept and specifically tailored to the needs of migraine and headache patients, drawing on specialized care. It not only records the course of symptoms with active data input based on scientific principles, but also analyzes this data, informs the user, and responds appropriately to alarming signals. The app provides information on behavioral measures and shows how the desired health goal can be achieved. It was developed collaboratively by specialized physicians, psychologists, patients, healthcare professionals, and scientists, drawing on decades of experience.

“Digital self-management using the migraine app increases therapy adherence, reduces the number of sick days, helps prevent medication overuse through targeted information, and improves participation in social life,” summarizes Prof. Dr. Hartmut Göbel, Chief Physician of the Kiel Pain Clinic, the results of his study with approximately 200 observed patients and nearly 100,000 sessions. Eight out of ten respondents (79.4 percent) praised the integration of external factors such as weather data into the app, two out of three patients (66 percent) find it advantageous to be able to contact other patients directly via the app, and around half (55 percent) reported that they have experienced a reduction in their disability caused by migraines or headaches since using the app.
