KIEL. Four physicians from Schleswig-Holstein have been awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Schleswig-Holstein for their outstanding service to humanity and for their contributions to medical research and science. Minister-President Daniel Günther and Health Minister Dr. Heiner Garg presented the awards on June 22, 2021, in Kiel.

Dr. Liselotte Mettler from Kiel, Dr. Georg Bollig from Schleswig, Professor Dr. Hartmut Göbel from Kiel, and Professor Dr. Tillmann Loch from Flensburg were honored "Their work and dedication in reproductive medicine, hospice care, pain therapy, and urology are truly exceptional ," said the Minister-President. "With their profound interest in science and in people, these physicians have accomplished extraordinary things in their professional lives and beyond, and are role models today. They all share a commitment to providing even better care for patients, going far beyond their professional duties. To this end, they build networks, develop new procedures, update textbooks, and invest a great deal of time ," Günther continued. He also acknowledged that the four physicians have advanced medicine from Schleswig-Holstein on a global scale: " In doing so, they have simultaneously represented our state internationally as a center for cutting-edge medicine and contributed significantly to the reputation of Schleswig-Holstein."

The laudatory speech stated, among other things: “Hartmut Göbel is a strong advocate for providing the best possible care for pain patients. With the establishment of a global network of experts, he has created a leading center for migraine and headache treatment. His coordinated treatment concept is the first integrated care model for migraine and headaches in Germany. He is the founder of the Kiel Pain Clinic and a recognized specialist in migraine and headache disorders. His clinic is internationally recognized as a model for translating scientific findings into patient care. It serves as a model and cooperation partner for leading international pain centers. The treatment concept is considered the standard of innovative pain therapy. Today, severe illnesses can be sustainably alleviated, and the quality of life of those affected can be significantly improved. He has expanded the implementation of scientific findings worldwide and created even better care options through the use of digital media. Furthermore, he is the author of numerous publications, supports self-help groups, and is committed to a network for rare headache disorders.”
