According to the World Health Organization, migraine is the sixth most severely disabling human disease. Headache disorders overall rank third among the most severely disabling diseases worldwide. Around a million people in Germany alone suffer from migraine attacks every day. Of these, 100,000 are bedridden every day. Over a billion people are affected worldwide. You don't usually die from migraines and headaches, but they still cost many lives. Suffering, disability, social withdrawal, dropping out of school, studies, work and severe psychological and physical complications are the fate of many of those affected. Migraines cause very severe pulsating, throbbing headaches. Physical activity increases pain, leaving patients confined to bed. They cannot participate in social and professional life. The attacks can be accompanied by severe nausea and insatiable vomiting. Light, noise and general excessive sensory sensitivity make the attacks even more difficult. In over 10% of those affected, the attacks can be initiated by neurological deficits such as severe visual impairments, paralysis, speech disorders or impaired consciousness. Serious complications of migraine include stroke, epileptic seizures and psychological comorbidities. In Germany alone, an average of 8.3 million people take headache medication every day to treat severe headaches.

The lack of knowledge among many healthcare stakeholders is the main barrier to contemporary treatment. During six years of student training, migraines and headaches are only a topic for around 4 hours on average worldwide. A large number of people with headaches go undiagnosed and untreated: only 40% of migraine sufferers and just 10% of medication overuse headache (MOH) patients receive a professional diagnosis, according to the WHO.

The lack of awareness of migraines and headaches is also present among the general public. Headaches are not perceived as serious by the public because they usually occur episodically, are not fatal, and are not contagious. Many governments around the world do not realize the significant burden headaches place on society. The social impact of individual suffering and long-term complications are greatly underestimated. The EU lists headaches as the third most expensive disease of the nervous system.
